Pastors and Ministry Leaders invited to be part of the Sixth Annual Greater Rochester Night to Honor Israel.

Rabbi Shaya Kilmnick (Beth Sholom) and Pastor Ron Domina (Region 10 Director for CUFI) at the National NTHI in Washington D.C.

Lori M. Sousa

On Sunday, March 25th Rochester area churches and ministries will gather together to host the Sixth Annual Greater Rochester Night to Honor Israel.  In 2007Rochester became the first city in the Northeast region of theU.S. to host such an event.  Since that date, a Night to Honor Israel has become a welcomed tradition in our region.

The annual Night to HonorIsraelis a time set aside to pay tribute to the Jewish people for the contributions that they have made to human history, despite centuries of persecution.  Aside fromIsrael’s historic struggles, we recognize the present day threat that the State of Israel and the Jewish people face.  Currently Israel finds herself in the midst of a rapidly destabilized Middle East. Iran is building nuclear weapons, thousands have been slaughtered in Syria and Libya, Egypt has imploded, and Israel is increasingly threatened. In the midst of all this, we are also witnessing a growing wave of global Anti-Semitism.  In the face of such threats, the Christian community needs to send a strong message of support to the people of Israel and to Jewish people around the world.  We must let them know that they are not alone in this critical hour.

If you are a pastor or ministry leader, please mark your calendar and plan to attend the free Night to Honor Israel Informational Luncheon being held on Wednesday January 25th at 11:30am at Bethel Christian Fellowship (321 East Avenue) in the Body Shop. At this luncheon Pastor Ron Domina will share the ongoing vision for the Greater Rochester Night to HonorIsrael.  He will also provide information about how churches and ministries can be part of this important night.  The Night to Honor Israel is a non-denominational and non-partisan event.  Our message is that although we may disagree on many things, when it comes to the existence of the State of Israel and rising global anti-Semitism, our community will stand withIsraelin voice and in action. In a day of global transition and uncertainty, our vision is to see the entire Christian community of Greater Rochester participate in this annual event. Last year more than 40 pastors and ministry leaders hosted the event, this year we aim to increase that number.

Please RSVP for this luncheon to Debbie Anderson at 232-1136, ext *34 by Friday, January 20th.  For additional questions, you may contact Lori Sousa at 232-1136, ext *21

Lori M. Sousa

July 28, 2011- On July 20th a NYS CUFI delegation of approximately 130 people went to Capitol Hill to speak to representatives about critical issues related to Israel. This year we presented a two-pronged message: Israel is not the obstacle to peace and the U.S. must place crippling sanctions on Iran to stop the terror-sponsoring state from acquiring nuclear arms.

As we return from the CUFI Summit, we recognize that the NYS delegation presented this critical message to our representatives on behalf of many NYS CUFI supporters who were physically not able to attend the Washington Summit. We also recognize how important it is for our representatives to hear from all NYS CUFI supporters that stand behind this message. Sample Letter for Congress:
Dear Honorable _______________________

I am writing in response to the visit that NYS Christians United for Israel (CUFI) made to your office on July 20th. As you may know, CUFI is a national grassroots organization that unites pro-Israel Christians in America under one umbrella to speak on issues relating to Israel. With a membership of over 720,000 CUFI is the largest pro-Israel organization in America. This year close to 5,000 people from every state in the U.S. came to Washington for the sixth annual Washington D.C. Summit. The New York State CUFI delegation that visited your office on the 20th represented thousands of CUFI supporters in NY State. I am one of those supporters and I am writing to thank you for your continued support of the State of Israel and to reiterate the message that CUFI brought to Capitol Hill this year.

First, thank you for supporting H. Res. 268, calling upon the Administration to announce that it will veto any resolution on Palestinian statehood that comes before the United Nations Security Council which is not a result of agreements reached directly between Israel and the Palestinians. The resolution also reaffirms the United States statutory requirement precluding assistance to a Palestinian Authority that includes Hamas unless that Authority and all its ministers publicly accept Israel’s right to exist and all prior agreements and understandings with the United States and Israel. As September approaches, we ask that you continue to do everything in your power to oppose the United Nations recognition of a Palestinian state and to suspend aid to the Palestinian Authority if they continue to pursue this measure or their alliance with Hamas. Further, we ask you to stand firm in opposing American pressure on Israel to make territorial concessions that the Israelis themselves do not wish to make.

Second, as you know Israel’s enemies are rapidly upgrading their military capabilities, especially in Iran and Syria. We cannot ignore these mounting challenges abroad as we confront our budget challenges at home. Israel is a critical ally and our first line of defense in the global war on terror. When we look at the cost to create friendly democracies in Iraq and Afghanistan, supporting Israel is an extremely effective way of maintain a friendly democracy in the Middle East. It is for these reasons that we ask you to support aid to Israel at the full level of the President’s request for fiscal year 2012 ($3.075 billion).

Finally, thank you for co-sponsoring the Iran Threat Reduction Act (H.R. 1905). CUFI has long supported tough economic sanctions against Iran, yet Iran continues to pursue nuclear weapons. The president of Iran has repeatedly threatened to wipe Israel off the map and destroy America. Iran is making steady progress toward this goal and the window to stop Iran from becoming a nuclear power is rapidly closing. To date, sanctions have not been tough enough to force the Iranians to change their policy. In June, Iran tested 14 ballistic missiles capable of hitting Israel and US bases in the region, they also unveiled underground silos for these missiles which make them harder to destroy. A nuclear armed Iran is not a threat that we can live with. With your help we need to do everything we can to stop Iran and our actions must be immediate.

As American who valued, life, liberty, freedom and democracy, our support for Israel must not waver. We recognize that Israel shares our values and stands on the front lines of a battle that affects every one of us. Thank you for representing our interest in Washington during this critical time, and thank you for personally meeting with the NY State CUFI delegation last week. We will continue to pray for you as you lead our nation. Please let us know if there is any way we can support you in your efforts.

Sincerely,

CUFI Delegates from New York Have a Successful Day on Capitol Hill

Lori M. Sousa

This past week Rochester area residents joined close to 130 delegates from New York as they traveled to Washington to meet with their representatives. Residents were part of the Christians United for Israel (CUFI) Sixth Annual Washington Summit. The New York delegation joined more than 5,000 committed supporters of the Jewish state who were present at the annual summit.

Since its founding in 2006, CUFI has expanded dramatically. CUFI is now the largest pro-Israel group in America, with over 720,000 members. This year the New York delegation had many unplanned meetings directly with members of congress/senate, as large numbers of New York constituents lined the halls waiting for scheduled meetings with congressional staff members. Many of representatives (who happened to be walking to or from their office) choose to stop for a brief meeting with us. Two of these unplanned meetings occurred with newly elected Congressman Reed NY-29; and with New York Senator Chuck Schumer.

This year CUFI members focused on three issues. First representatives we urged to oppose American pressure on Israel to divide Jerusalem or make other territorial concessions which the Israelis themselves do not wish to make. Representatives also urged to do everything in their power to oppose United Nations recognition of a Palestinian state and to suspend aid to the Palestinian Authority if they continue to pursue this measure or their alliance with Hamas. Second Congress was encouraged to approve the $3.075 billion in security assistance that the President has requested for Israel in the 2012 fiscal year budget. Last, House members were urged to co-sponsor the Iran Threat Reduction act (H.R. 1905) and Senate asked to co-sponsor the Iran, North Korea and Syria Sanctions Consolidation Act of 2011 (S. 1048). Please take a couple of minuets to send your representatives a follow-up email by clicking the link below.

The day that the CUFI delegation met with representatives, a House panel was meeting to push ahead on a bill to block U.S. assistance to Pakistan, Egypt, Lebanon, Yemen and the Palestinian Authority unless the Obama administration reassured Congress that they are cooperating in the war on terrorism (this included measures to assure the U.S. that the PA was not working with Hamas. The panel also voted that day 23-17 to cut the U.S. contribution to the United Nations by 25 percent.

One of the highlights of the trip was a surprised meeting that occurred with Senator Schumer as the New York delegation waited for a scheduled appointment with a legislative staff member. Senator Schumer stopped to inquire about the reason for the large group of constituents gathered outside of his door. As the delegation explained that they were in D.C. representing CUFI and views related to support for Israel, Senator Schumer responded by sharing Schumer “You know, my name …. comes from the word shomer, guardian, watcher. My ancestors were guardians of the ghetto wall in Chortkov. And I believe God actually gave me that name. One of my roles, very important in the United States senate, is to be a guardian- to be the guardian of Israel. And I will continue to be that with every bone in my body …”

With God’s help, we are making a difference as we actively stand for Israel in our day. Thanks to all of you who have answered the call to be part of this historic move. Your commitment to stand up and speak out in defense of Israel and her people is not in vain. As we see events unfold in the Middle East and rising anti-Semitism in our own nation, we recognize that the battle for Israel existence is fierce…but do not be discouraged—rember the words of Kenneth Copeland at the NTHI “Have faith” , “but God” — with God and his heavenly hosts, there are more that are for us than against us.

I trust that our numbers in NY will double for next year and that many will continue to actively reach out to their Representatives about significant legislation throughout the year.

1,500 Gather for the Fifth Annual Greater Rochester Night to Honor Israel

Lori M. Sousa

Jewish Ledger – For the fifth straight year, the Christian Community in Greater Rochester came together to host the Annual Greater Rochester Night to Honor Israel (NTHI). This year close to 45 congregations throughout Rochester supported the event. An estimated 1,500 people filled Bethel Christian Fellowship to pay tribute to the State of Israel and Jewish people around the world. The event was attended by leaders of the local Jewish community and local representative such as New York State Senator Joseph Robach, Rochester Action Mayor R. Carlos Carballada, County Executive Maggie Brooks and Brighton Town Supervisor Sandra Frankel,

Pastor Ron Domina opened the gathering by emphasizing the importance of this year’s event. Domina said, “There has never been a more critical time to voice our support for Israel.” He underscored the growing instability in the Middle East stating “The existential threat that Israel faces intensifies daily. The State of Israel is surrounded by instable and often unfriendly neighbors, and as Americans who value freedom, life and liberty, our support for Israel must remain firm.” Rabbi Shaya Kilimnick of Congregation Beth Shalom also addressed the audience saying that Israel needs the united support of Christians and Jews around the world now more than ever. “We are together united, Christians and Jews, for the support of Israel and State of Israel,” he said. “This is our time to honor Israel and by doing so we acknowledge the truth of survival and by doing so, Christian and Jew together, our creator looks down from his holy throne and smiles.”

A Night to Honor Israel (NTHI) is an initiative of Christians United for Israel (CUFI). One of the main objectives of CUFI is to hold annual Nights to Honor Israel in every major U.S. city. CUFI is focused on one issue: supporting Israel. Since CUFI’s inception in February 2006, tens of thousands of American Christians have participated in Night to Honor Israel events in over 150 cities across the United States. During these events millions of dollars have been donated to Israeli and Jewish charities.

Event organizer, Lori Sousa says that it is important for our community to come together every year to honor Israel, Sousa states, “We come together on an annual basis to celebrate a people who have rarely been honored for the vast contributions that they have made to human history. Throughout history Jewish generosity has been rewarded with persecution and oppression. Unfortunately, much of has been done at the hands of professing Christians. In our generation we endeavor to announce a new day in human history-a day where Christians stand with Jews declaring to the world that we are united in brotherhood.”

At this year’s event, the Deputy Consul General of Israel in New York, Shlomi Kofman brought greetings on behalf of the State of Israel and Irving Roth
(Holocaust Survivor, International Speaker, and Author) was the main keynote speaker. During the program, those in attendance were encouraged demonstrate their support for Israel by making a financial contribution. $17,161 was received in this year’s offering. Out of the money collected, a $5,000 State of Israel Bond was purchased and donated to the Hillel Community Day School. The remaining moneys will go to strengthen the work of CUFI on Campus in New York State, and a portion of the offering will also be donated to the Fogel Family Fund in Israel.

This year’s event emphasized the need to educate the youth-this generation of leaders who are emerging on our college campuses. David Walker (CUFI on Campus Eastern Coordinator) spoke about the vision of CUFI on Campus- “to develop politically minded student leaders who are equipped to become effective advocates for Israel on their college campus.” The first upstate New York chapter of CUFI on Campus was recently organized on the campus of Roberts Wesleyan College. Sixteen students from this chapter were present at the event. Victor Styrsky, (Eastern Coordinator for CUFI) also encouraged everyone in attendance join the thousands of people who will travel Washington, D.C. this July to speak to elected officials about the importance of standing with Israel in this hour.

The event closed with a Pastor Domina standing with Rabbi Kilimnick as the Rabbi led the congregation in a prayer for Israel. Participants were also reminded to mark their calendar for the 2012 NTHI that is scheduled for March 25th. The event is held every year on the last Sunday in March except if it conflicts with a Jewish or Christian holiday. Onward, Christian Zionists The fastest growing Israel support group in America.

Jul 24, 2010, Vol. 15, No. 43 • By JENNIFER RUBIN

www.weeklystandard.com – In Washington, D.C.’s convention center they danced the horah, sang Hebrew songs, and waved American and Israeli flags. Charlie Daniels played Hatikvah on his fiddle. It wasn’t a bar mitzvah, or a gathering of the pro-Israel group AIPAC. It was the fifth annual summit of an even larger pro-Israel organization, the nation’s largest: Christians United for Israel, better known as CUFI.

A few hours before addressing the convention, its founder, Pastor John Hagee, explained how CUFI came to exist. “I went to Israel in 1978 as a tourist with a group of people from my church and I came home a Zionist,” he said. “I felt the presence of God in the city of Jerusalem like no place on earth.” Praying at the Western Wall, he realized he had to “do everything in my power to bring Christians and Jews together in an atmosphere of mutual esteem and acceptance.”

At first, he didn’t know how to begin. But in 1981, after an Israeli airstrike blew up the Iraqi nuclear reactor at Osirak, “the American media went after Israel hammer and claw. I saw the door of opportunity open. I told my wife as we watched the television with the news anchor berating Israel and Menachem Begin, ‘We are going to have a night for Israel.’?”

Hagee approached the local Jewish leaders to suggest a gala fundraiser. He deadpanned, “They looked at me like I had a serious and contagious rash.” Hagee won them over, held a news conference with an orthodox rabbi announcing the event, and “within hours started receiving death threats at the church. We had the night for Israel, and it was terrific.” When a bomb threat came, he remembered declaring, “If these gun-toting anti-Semites think they can shut us down by threatening us, we are going to do it every year until they get used to it!”

Through his ministry and then with the founding of CUFI in 2006, Hagee has been at it ever since. “CUFI began with 400 evangelicals in February 2006. Today we have 426,000 members.” The purpose of the group, Hagee said, was to give “every pro-Israel Christian and Christian church the opportunity to stand up and speak up for Israel.” When they lobby on Capitol Hill, he said, his members “ask the leadership of our government to stop putting pressure on Israel to divide Jerusalem and the land of Israel.”

Since 2006, CUFI has held hundreds of events nationwide, raising $43 million for humanitarian work (including that of Migdal Ohr in Galilee which serves disadvantaged youth and the Kiryat Yam absorption center for Ethiopian Jews) and inspiring Christian support for the Jewish state. Pastor Scott Thomas of Lakeland, Florida, explained that thousands have rediscovered the “Judeo part of our faith.” He recalled a Tampa Night for Israel that raised money for flak jackets to protect IDF troops in Tiberius, and a night in Pensacola that bought a bomb shelter for residents of Sderot, the small town on the receiving end of rockets launched by Hamas from Gaza.

Now, with the Iranian nuclear threat growing, relations with the Obama administration tumultuous, and assaults on Israel in international bodies a daily occurrence, Israel can use some real friends. At the banquet, Senator Joe Lieberman-he introduced himself as “your brother Joseph”-observed that this “is a time when the people of Israel feel more vulnerable and isolated than in a long time. . . . But because of CUFI and Christian Zionists throughout the world the people and the children of Israel do not feel isolated from the international community of faith.”

CUFI members affirm the consonance between their faith, patriotism, and support for Israel. Thomas explains, “When I stand up for Israel, I stand up for America.” He says that his members’ religious roots bring them to support Israel, but recent events have mobilized them to confront biased media accounts, fundraise, lobby, educate fellow Christians, and pray for Israel. “The Bible directs us, but the facts inform us,” he says.

Unlike many Jewish organizations, CUFI continues to grow. Pastor Carlos Ortiz, who conducts Hispanic outreach for the group, has helped bring in 1,500 churches. Among Jews, there remains some skepticism and some outright hostility. Yet Hagee noted progress among those Jews whose support for Israel is grounded in their faith. “There is a level of comfort between Christians and Jews who believe in and accept the Torah as the word of God.” His own devotion is an expression of his Christian faith. He explained:

The Bible from Genesis to Revelation is a Zionist text. To read and understand the Bible is to accept the reality that the Jewish people are not living where they chose but where God chose. There is a real estate contract recorded in the Bible with the boundaries of Israel, given as clearly as the human tongue can express. And the land is God’s gift to the Jewish people. That’s not political. It is the will of the sovereign and eternal God.

Hagee is bracingly candid about the historical underpinnings of Jews’ mistrust:

I understand the fear of some Jewish people of Christians because for 2,000 years they were killed under the sign of the cross. When a Jewish person sees the cross he sees an electric chair. When a Christian sees a cross he sees hope and redemption. Two thousand years of suffering won’t be overcome overnight.

In addition, antipathy toward CUFI may be attributable partly to aversion to the rest of the Christian right’s political agenda. As for Jews’ concern about Christian proselytizing, Ortiz says suspicion fades “when they see we are not trying to convert them.”

Hagee is a charismatic preacher with a sonorous baritone voice. At the banquet, he held the crowd spellbound, explaining Israel’s plight and the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran. He reminded the crowd that John F. Kennedy went to Berlin at the height of the Cold War, “an outpost of democracy in a sea of tyranny.” He quoted Kennedy: “Two thousand years ago the proudest boast was ‘civis Romanus sum.’ Today, in the world of freedom, the proudest boast is ‘Ich bin ein Berliner.’?” Hagee then pivoted:

I stand here at a time when Israel is a tiny outpost of freedom and democracy in a sea of tyranny. . . .??Permit me to say something to you straight from the heart. Please know that what I say to you now is a sentiment shared by millions of Christians across America and around the world. Today, in the world of freedom, the proudest boast is “Ani Yisraeli-I am an Israeli.”

As he recited the litany of threats and insults to the Jewish state, he repeated the mantra again and again until 4,000 Christians stood shouting, “I am an Israeli.”

Former deputy national security adviser Elliott Abrams, who oversaw Israel policy in the Bush administration, appreciates that support. “American Jews ought to notice that there are actually more evangelicals in this country than Jews by about 20 or 30 to 1,” he says. “With the Jewish population shrinking as a percentage of the American people, Christians are an increasingly critical base of support for Israel-and groups like CUFI are begging us to accept their help. We should accept it with gratitude and enthusiasm.”

CUFI activists understand that America’s enemies-Islamist terrorists-are Israel’s enemies, too. They appreciate a robust defense of both countries. Abrams in a panel discussion urged those present to make their voices heard when, for example, a lawmaker “plays footsie with CAIR.” The crowd erupted. Co-panelist Malcolm Hoenlein, of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, demanded “transparency” from the builders of a mosque near Ground Zero and warned against groups that would “undermine the fundamental values of the United States.” He too got a rousing ovation.

CUFI executive director David Brog says recent events have caught his members’ attention. “They are upset this president is taking a different approach to Israel and there is daylight between our countries for the first time.” He bristles at the notion that CUFI is “politicizing” foreign policy. Indeed, Brog worries about the “bipartisan fraying” of support for Israel. With CUFI’s Democratic members, including many Hispanics, he hopes to “affect the debate in the Democratic party. It would be a tragedy if one of the two parties ceased to be pro-Israel.” After all, Brog says, “We are speaking for a traditional foreign policy. We must stand for principle and not just power.”

Ortiz says these are critical times for Israel. He tells the story of the Jewish queen Esther, when the Jews were threatened with annihilation in ancient Persia. “Her uncle comes to her and says, ‘You gotta move, baby, or your people will perish.’?” CUFI is on the move. It has no intention of allowing Israel to perish.
